Lets talk about Berserk of Gluttony. This manga is one of my absolute favorites. Let’s start things off with a small note: This review is 100% my opinion, you can have a totally different experience reading this manga, depending on your expectations!
Manga Details
Summary
Fate Barbatos has never tasted real power. Born with the magical skill Gluttony, he constantly hungers in a way that can’t be satiated, and has been shunned and looked down upon his entire life. One day, while working as a gatekeeper for a noble family and fighting a trespassing thief, he discovers Gluttony’s true power: when he kills someone, he devours their skills and feeds his gnawing hunger at last. In that grisly realization, Fate is awakened to his true potential. How many lives will he feed on to satisfy this hunger, and is the world ready for the frightening warrior he’ll become?
Introduction
To be fair: I have seen worse. The act of introducing the reader to the world of the comic is probably the hardest thing to get right as an author. Therefore, it was rather to be expected that the first chapter is basically a bombardment of facts. Long story short:
- The protagonist is called “Fate”
- He lives in the capital (“Seyfert”)
- He has the skill “Gluttony” which only seems to make him hungry
- He works as a gatekeeper
- He is treated like trash by a certain group of “Holy Knights”
- The other protagonist “Roxy Heart” protects him from the bullies
The first chapter ends with him realising the true potential of his “Gluttony” when he “steals” the skill of a bandit.
The Kick-Off
After realising the skill’s true potential, he starts his journey of becoming stronger (Even though this means to kill people, since his skill only steals the skills of people he killed)
Since he managed to kill one bandit himself, he is invited to work for “House Heart”, the family of his saviour “Roxy Heart”. This is the part that really kick-starts the story.
Criticism
When you first start reading “Berserk of Gluttony” you are greeted with chapter 0: the prologue. While it certainly fulfilled its purpose of giving you a trailer for the upcoming chapters, I personally recommend skipping it and just start with the first chapter called “Those Without”. This way the story is way more exciting.
Conclusion
In Summary I really recommend this manga to anyone who likes some good action fantasy manga. You wont regret it, I promise!
